Overview
The Shey Phoksundo Bike Trip is a rugged ride through the isolated lower valleys of Dolpo to the holy mountain lake of Shey Phoksundo. Largely through Shey Phoksundo National Park, there are rugged mountain roads that lead to ancient villages and wind-carved landscapes.
It is followed by a 2 to 7 day journey over rudimental paths (depending on road conditions) from either Nepalgunj or Surkhet via Jajarkot, Dunai and Chhepka. It is a route perfect if you are looking for the raw Himalayan adventure with steep trails, river crossings, high altitude pass and a short trek to the lake.
Highlights of the Shey Phoksundo Bike Trip
Shey Phoksundo Lake: The most photogenic lake in Nepal is also the deepest one and it is a sacred lake for Bon and Buddhist communities. The lake is surrounded by sheer cliffs and its water is of striking blue-green color.
Ringmo & Tshowa Gompa: A fossil village and monastery complex where the past of Bon Buddhist culture of Dolpo is reflected in the presence of prayer flags and mani walls.
Jharana Waterfall: Among the highest waterfalls in Nepal, it can be seen close to the outlet of the lake and is reachable via a short hike from the Ringmo trail.
Dolpo Valleys & Roads: The way goes through Dunai, Raha and Chepka; steep valleys, suspension bridges and stretches of dirt road that have been cut into the rock faces.
Culture & Spiritual Landscape: The tranquil villages of Dolpo are the last places where you can find Bon rituals, chortens, and mud brick houses which have not been influenced by modernity, thus at every stop you get to experience a journey through time.
